Description

A barn and cow house, dating to the late 18th century, with later 20th-century alterations, situated approximately 30 metres west-north-west of Alderminster Farmhouse. The building was converted into houses in 1994. Constructed of red brick with a tile roof, the barn features an L-shaped open-fronted shed at its north end, and an L-shaped cow house to the west of its south end.

The barn, with seven bays, has exposed wall plates. There are two threshing floors, each with 20th-century glazed infill to entrances on either side; the southern entrance retains limestone sills. The east-facing side, overlooking the yard, includes inserted segmental-headed windows, an entrance at the left end, small first-floor windows, and skylights. Rows of ventilation holes are present. A wrought iron weather vane with a fox is fixed to the left end. The west side mirrors these features, with a similar arrangement of openings and an original entrance on the left. A four-bay stable projects from the south end, featuring a cogged brick cornice. The inner return wall incorporates a segmental-headed entrance with original hinges and latch, leading to a renewed plank door, and segmental-headed windows with sliding-slat ventilation openings to each end. Evidence suggests the presence of an external staircase leading to the first-floor entrance. The end of the stable has a pitching door, while the outer return wall has two entrances and two late 20th-century gabled half-dormers.

The two-storey cow house to the south end has undergone some rebuilding; it includes a pair of wide entrances on the west side and an open front supported by four brick piers on the north side. Most of the roof trusses have been renewed.

The barn’s interior reveals brick piers supporting a queen-post roof with collars, truncated principals, and double purlins; stone flags remain on the threshing floors, although some have been removed, with a later floor recorded in the left-end bay. The cow house features three chamfered beams supporting tall queen struts to interrupted tie-beam trusses with collars and principals halved and crossed to the ridge, and a brick floor raised on the north side.

The building is included for its group value with Alderminster Farmhouse.
