Description
Brailes House is a house located on the north side of Brailes High Street, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with some earlier stonework visible in the rear wall. The property has undergone 20th-century alterations and additions. The garden front features ironstone ashlar and has a hipped slate roof with stone end and lateral stacks. The house is two storeys tall and has a four-window range, which includes what is likely the original canted two-storey three-light bay window on the left. Access is provided by semi-circular stone steps leading to French doors in the bay window. To the left of the bay window is a sash, and there are two sashes to the right, all with glazing bars (12 panes in total) and stone sills. The first floor has a similar window arrangement. A moulded stone cornice runs below a stone-coped parapet, and there is a flat band at the first floor level. A 20th-century porch is located at the right end of the house. The rear left side has two-storey ironstone rubble walls, a greenhouse extension, and a 20th-century cloakroom extension at the rear right. Inside, there is an early 19th-century open well staircase with a wreathed handrail, a 19th-century marble and wrought-iron fireplace, a carved wood fireplace surround in the dining room, and an early 19th-century marble surround in the drawing room. The cellar features brick arches, and there are 19th-century ceiling bands and architraves around the doors, along with a through purlin roof.
