Description
A pair of cottages located on Butter Street, originally built in the early 17th century and significantly altered in the early to mid-19th century. The cottages are timber framed, with the exterior now faced in whitewashed brick and a dentil brick cornice. They have a concrete tile roof and brick ridge stacks. The building follows a double-depth plan, with three rooms on each floor. The cottages are one storey high with an attic, and have a three-window front. They feature a pair of entrances with moulded wooden door surrounds and projecting cornices above. Number 5 has a four-panelled door, while Number 3 has a later 20th-century plank door. Segmental brick arches enclose a half-glazed door to Number 7 and an adjoining 20th-century passage door. Number 3 includes a two-storey canted bay which abuts Number 1 and rises above the main roofline, and Number 5 features a mid- to late-19th century canted bay with a 16-pane sash window. There are two hipped dormers with wood and iron casements and glazing bars. At the rear, Number 5 includes a small late 17th-century single-storey timber-framed wing, partly rebuilt in brick, along with 19th-century brick additions. The interior of Number 5 reveals exposed timber framing, including a jowled post, broad chamfered ceiling beams, exposed wind braces, and some exposed wattle. A small portion of the ground floor is part of Number 7, a separate listed building.
