Description
This building is a stable with a granary above, along with an attached barn and animal house, located approximately 7 meters north of Gorcott Hall. The stable and granary date from the mid to late 17th century, featuring later alterations and a 19th-century addition. The barn was built in the 18th to early 19th century, while the animal house dates from the 17th to 18th century, with 19th and 20th-century modifications.
The stable is constructed of red brick with a pattern of dark blue headers and has gauged brick dressings. The granary is timber framed with square framing, tension braces, and some 20th-century brick infill. It has a continuous old tile roof that is hipped on the right and consists of four bays. There is a plank door on the right with a gauged brick flat arch, a central stable door with a segmental brick arch likely from the 19th century, and a blocked high wide doorway on the left with a gauged brick flat arch. The granary also features four gauged brick oval openings and an addition on the right with a catslide roof. This addition is made of red brick with brick corbelling and includes a plank door with a door above under a brick segmental arch, as well as an adjacent shuttered opening. The rear has a blocked segmental arched doorway and two oval openings, with the addition having a door above ground level.
Inside, the stable has a queen strut roof. The attached barn on the left continues the roofline and is made of brick with a brick dentil cornice and vents. It has an old tile roof and consists of three bays, featuring a central doorway with a segmental arch and a wood lintel, although the doors have been removed. The left return side has a gable parapet with kneelers, and the rear has a 20th-century opening with a wood lintel in the left bay. The interior includes brick spur walls and a queen strut roof.
The animal house is attached at right angles on the left, with a rear wall that is timber framed and has brick infill, while the side and front walls have been rebuilt in brick. It has an old tile roof and consists of five bays, featuring a central stable door and four 20th-century round arched openings with shutters. The interior has a king post roof with rough timbers.
This building forms part of an interesting group with Gorcott Hall and the gatepiers and garden walls located to the southeast and southwest of Gorcott Hall.
