Description

Gardener's Cottage and attached garden walls at Bilton Grange were built around 1846 for Captain JH Washington Hibbert and have undergone some alterations in the mid and late 20th century. The cottage is constructed of red brick and features roofs adorned with bands of fish-scale tiles and coped gable stacks, along with rebated eaves. It is two storeys high and has three bays on the front elevation. The windows are primarily original iron-framed glazing bar casements with stone surrounds and mullions.

The front of the cottage includes a central gabled porch with a Tudor arched opening, flanked by two four-light casements with wooden mullions. To the left, there is an original two-light window, while to the right, a late 20th-century casement has been added. Above the porch, there are two through-eaves dormers with steeply pitched gables, each containing two-light casements. The rear elevation features a similar dormer in the center. To the right, there is a lower single bay projection with a 20th-century window at the front and two original single casements at the rear. The right gable has an original two-light window, while the left gable, which faces the gardens, has a narrow single-light window to the left and a floral panel in the gable.

The garden walls enclose a square area of approximately 200 meters on each side and include a plinth, external buttresses, and gabled tile coping. On the east and north sides, there is a central entrance featuring a chamfered and rebated Tudor arched doorway with original double doors, sheltered by a tiled hipped canopy. The gateway to the south has been replaced. Adjacent to the gardener's cottage is a smaller, single pointed arched doorway with an original door. In the center of the garden, there is an octagonal pond, approximately 10 meters across, with a stone kerb and four sets of steps aligned with the garden gateways.

Inside, the cottage retains much of its original layout. The original staircase features chamfered square newels and a panelled balustrade leading to the stairs and landing. The main ground floor room includes an original fitted cupboard. On the first floor, there is an original chamfered fireplace surround and several original doors.
