Description
Rugby Road Lodge at Bilton Grange is a mid-19th century estate cottage built for Captain J. H. Washington Hibbert. The building features white brick with red brick and ashlar dressings, topped with Welsh slate roofs that have tile crests on the south ranges and coped gables on the north. It has two external gable stacks with four clustered flues, which were rebuilt in red brick in the 20th century. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, the lodge is two storeys tall and has a symmetrical layout of two bays on each side.
The south range retains many original windows, characterized by stone mullions and lattice glazing. It features two gables adorned with diaper work and the initials of the Hibbert family. To the left, there is a porch with an elliptical arched doorway set within a coped gable, which includes a shield-shaped datestone, possibly from 1853. The left side has a single window, while the right side has a similar three-light window, both with pointed arches. The left gable includes a two-light window on each floor, and the right gable has two single windows, one of which has been renewed, along with a two-light window above, all featuring pointed arches. The left return mirrors this decoration, with a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window above, both with flat heads. The right return has renewed and inserted windows and a door.
The north range gable also displays diaper work and the Hibbert family initials, with reglazed windows in their original openings, including a two-light window flanked by single lights and a three-light window above. Above this, there is a cruciform cusped recess. The rear elevation features a lean-to wooden porch, which was extended and infilled in the late 20th century, flanked by single-storey outbuildings from the 19th century. Above, there is a through-eaves dormer with a renewed window.
Inside, the lodge has two winder staircases, one with a solid newel and the other with stick balusters and square newels. There are also two original four-panel doors.
