Description
Rugby Arm Bridge, built between 1831 and 1834, carries the towpath across Rugby Wharf Arm of the Oxford Canal. It features a single span with a cambered deck made of prefabricated cast-iron plates. The haunches of the bridge are inscribed with the name of the manufacturer, Horseley Iron Works. The openwork parapet consists of moulded cast-iron railings arranged in a regular, elongated diamond pattern. The bridge is supported by solid brick abutments and wing walls at the trailing edge, which have brick copings. This structure was constructed during improvements to the Oxford Canal, with William Cubitt serving as the consulting engineer. There have been slight alterations made in the 20th century.
