Description
The British Thomson-Houston Company War Memorial is a Grade II* listed structure made of Portland stone. It features a war cross designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, which stands approximately 7.3 meters tall with a slender, tapering shape. The shaft has a lozenge section, and the short cross arms are connected to the base by stop chamfers and cyma moulding. The base consists of four stepped rectangular blocks of varying heights, all resting on a square plinth. This entire structure is elevated on a large circular plinth that measures about 7.5 meters in diameter, which is a distinctive feature compared to Lutyens' other war crosses.
The main inscription on the front of the square plinth reads "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON COY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WARS," with the years 1914 and 1919 on one side and 1939 and 1945 on the other. Additionally, the square step is inscribed with "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE," and the names of the fallen are carved around the sides of the large circular plinth.
The memorial is located in a small garden on Technology Drive, where two wooden benches, originally built in the factory, have been placed to the north of the memorial at the head of a small paved area.
