Description

The terrace wall and steps located south and west of Dunchurch Lodge were built in 1908 by TH Mawson for John Lancaster. Constructed from ashlar and red brick, the terrace spans the entire width of the south front of the house. It is bordered on the east, west, and south sides by a retaining wall that features a turned balustrade and square piers on top. In the center of the south side, there is a flight of steps with an intermediate landing; the lower flight has curving splayed balustrade walls and ball finials. The east and west ends, along with the western wing terrace, include single flights of plain steps.

Attached to the east end of the house, aligned with the south front, is a similar retaining wall approximately 30 meters long, which has an off-center flight of steps and wider steps at the splayed southeast angle. This wall extends northwest for about 10 meters and features a flight of semicircular steps. Originally, this wall enclosed the entrance court, but its balustrade and gateways were removed during alterations in 1951-52. One pair of gates was relocated to Caldecott Park in Rugby.

To the west of the house, in line with the south front, there is a brick wall approximately 20 meters long and 3 meters high, topped with moulded stone coping. This wall includes a round arched doorway with a lattice door and a pedimented gable. Northwest of this wall is a low retaining wall about 30 meters long, featuring slab coping and two semicircular flights of steps leading to the former rose garden and bowling alley. At its northwest end, this wall connects to the kitchen garden wall.
