Description
Austrey Baptist Church is a Baptist chapel built in 1808. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features a brick dentil cornice and a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has three bays. The symmetrical front includes 20th-century double teal doors, which are set within a blank round arch and have a brick segmental arch above. There are small round-arched windows with glazing bars, and all openings are adorned with keystones and imposts. The plain, shallow-pitched gable has a clock.
On the right side, there is an attached slate monument slab, signed by C. Cooper and dated 1825, featuring incised decoration and inscriptions to the Burton family. The return sides have four bays, with the fourth bay slightly set back. The left side has several blocked windows and an external stack, while the right side features a plank door with a segmental arch leading to the fourth bay and a blocked window above. The two-bay rear has altered or blocked openings.
Inside, there is a gallery with a panelled front supported by slender iron columns above the entrance, and the opposite end is also panelled with a gallery above. The interior fittings date from the mid to late 19th century.
