Description
The pound at the south end of Bentley Common is a structure dated 1846. It is built from sandstone rubble with dressed quoins and rubble coping. The walls stand about 2 metres tall and enclose a pound that measures approximately 6 metres square. There is a wide opening on the southeast side, featuring wooden gate-posts. A section of the wall at the west corner has collapsed. Near the top of the northeast wall, one of the stones is roughly inscribed with 'BILT 1846' and possibly 'MINE' or 'MINER'. It is believed that the pound may have been rebuilt by miners from a coal mine located about half a mile away in Baxterley. The mine was owned by the Dugdales of Merevale Hall, whose estate included Bentley.
