Description
Brewery House is a former workhouse, now serving as a hotel annexe, built in 1750 for the Lords Weymouth and Middleton. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a hipped tile roof with brick stacks. It is designed in a Georgian style and has a U-plan layout.
The structure is two storeys high and presents a symmetrical five-window range, with the central window set in a forward break beneath a pediment. The building has an ashlar plinth and cornice. The entrance is framed by an architrave with a keystone and includes a narrow overlight above a three-panel door. The windows have sills and are topped with rubbed brick flat arches featuring keystones above four-pane horned sashes.
The left return of the building has a nine-window range, with two windows at each end in forward breaks, and similar architectural details, including a central entrance with a glazed door and two stacks. The right return has a late 20th-century addition between the wings, with inner returns that feature a ground floor window with a cross-casement and a pegged frame. The rear of the building has been altered, featuring three cross-casements over a lean-to outshut, with a 20th-century gabled wing to the left, a top gablet over the projecting end of a stack, and two additional stacks.
The interior has undergone significant alterations. Historically, this building was known as the Castle Brewery.
