Description
Nos. 9 and 11 Lower Gungate are two shops dating from the 17th century, with later alterations. The buildings have a timber frame with later brick infill and some stone rubble, topped with a tile roof and a brick end stack. They are two storeys high and feature a two-window range. The entrances have 20th-century glazed doors. The ground floor has segmental-headed windows with 20th-century small-paned glazing, while the first floor has two small-paned casements. The ground floor includes underbuilding with a wall post at the right end, and the first floor displays square framing with tension braces. The rubble at the left end is part of the wall to the rear of No. 9, which is part of the medieval deanery. The rear of the buildings has gabled additions. Inside, there are chamfered beams and timber-framed partition walls, along with winder staircases.
