Description

Tamworth Arts Centre is a building located on Church Street in Tamworth. Originally shown on the Ordnance Survey map as a Baptist Church, it dates back to around 1770. It served as a malt house in the early 19th century and became a Baptist chapel in 1870. A porch was added in 1908, and it was converted into an arts centre in 1970. The building is constructed of stuccoed brick with pebbledash and terracotta dressings, topped with a tile roof. It has a right-angle plan and stands two storeys tall.

The façade features pilasters and a gable with a dentilled pediment. The entrance is located in the porch, which has a terracotta top frieze and parapet, along with a high plinth that includes squat paired Ionic half-columns with entasis. This supports a pulvinated frieze and cornice, which in turn supports a round-arched hood with 20th-century infill and doors. There are plain 20th-century entrances on either side with bull's eyes above. The first floor has three round-headed 19th-century windows, each with angle pilasters, archivolts, and keystones over small-paned glazing.

The right return facing Gungate features a weathered plinth and cornice, a 20th-century entrance at the right end, and ground floor windows that cut into the plinth, along with round-headed windows on the first floor. The ridge has a truncated louvre. The interior has been much altered but includes a round-arched recess on the end wall. Notably, Sarah Siddons is said to have performed in the theatre around 1773. The building is an important landmark in Tamworth and holds significant local historical importance.
