Description
The Old Stone Cross Public House is a building dating from the early 18th century, with early 16th century cellars. The facade was reconstructed in 1974. It is constructed of brick, with some timber framing and concrete dressings, and features a hipped tile roof with brick stacks. The building is L-shaped and has two storeys with a five-window range. The corners are accentuated with quoins. There are two entrances, each with bracketed round-arched hoods and 20th-century six-fielded-panel doors. The windows feature wedge lintels with keystones above 20th-century casements. A plaque on the building notes the reconstruction. There is a large cross-axial stack, and the right return is plastered with a simple cornice. The left return reveals part of a gable above an adjacent building, showcasing an exposed roof truss with a collar and principals crossed at the apex. The rear of the building has a plastered gabled wing with a large end stack. Inside, the ground floor features chamfered beams, while the cellar has a rib vault with chamfered ribs and Tudor-rose bosses. Photographs from the 1970s show the left return revealed, displaying square framing.
