Description
Bolehall Viaduct is a railway viaduct built between 1837 and 1839, designed by engineers R. Stephenson and G. Bidder for the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway. The structure is made of rusticated ashlar and features 19 arches. Arches 6 and 7 span the River Anker, arch 10 spans Amington Road, and arch 19 is lower and wider, spanning Glascote Road. The viaduct has rusticated segmental arches, with piers that have rock-faced jambs and round cutwaters at the river. It is topped with a bold modillioned cornice and parapet, and the abutments are swept forward. Additionally, two arches have low stone walls flanking the entrance gates. This viaduct is an important landmark at the southeast end of Tamworth.
