Description
Fields Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1705 and 1715, with a significant addition from the mid-18th century and alterations from the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar quoins and dressings, as well as coursed and dressed stone, topped with tie and stone slate roofs and brick end stacks.
The front of the building is divided into two parts. The left gable section is two storeys tall with an attic, featuring verge parapets and chamfer-mullion casement windows: a 2-light window in the attic, a 4-light window on the first floor, and a single-light window on the ground floor. To the right, there is a boarded door accompanied by a circular inscribed datestone marked 'R'.
The early 19th-century wing to the right is also two storeys high, displaying a parapet with a cornice and a string course at the first floor level. This section has a symmetrical layout with three windows, featuring glazing bar sashes with rusticated voussoir heads. The centre window is enlarged and has a moulded architrave that ramps to the keystone, serving as a pilastered background for a pediment doorcase on corbels, which contains a four-panel arch-top door.
At the rear, the mid-18th-century wing is stone-faced and includes a large mullioned and transomed stair window. The rear gable features 4-light mullioned windows on both the ground and first floors, and a 2-light window in the attic. There is another datestone at the apex inscribed 'M'. Both datestones reference the Reade family, who were notable builders known as W R, previously of Blackwood Hill.
Inside, the farmhouse features a Chinese Chippendale staircase with dog-gates located centrally in the 18th-century wing, as well as arch-top panelled cupboards flanking the fireplace in the room to the right of the entrance.
