Description
Blackwood Hill Farmhouse is a 16th-century farmhouse with an addition dating to 1698, and alterations and additions from the mid-19th century. The construction is of coursed and squared rubble with timber framing, brick infill, and repairs, and has a tiled roof with verge parapets. The layout is an extended 'T' lobby-entrance plan with a cross wing as the original core.
The front of the house is divided into three parts, two storeys high with attics. The left-hand side features a late 16th-century timber-framed gable, where the apex has been replaced with brickwork over closely-set uprights, displaying diagonal braces at the tie and cill, and set on a stone plinth. The attic has enlarged 19th-century casements with small lattice lights. To the right of the gable is a 17th-century stone range, which incorporates a chamfered mullioned two-light window to the ground floor right and a smaller 19th-century window to the first floor left, positioned above a massive, labelled lintel inscribed "Wm Reade", with a slightly arched form. A 19th-century part-glazed door is situated centrally. A lower, set-back bay from the mid-19th century extends to the left of the timber-framed gable, dated 1698. The right-hand gable features an oculus to the apex above a range of three-light, chamfered mullion windows. William Reade was also involved in work at Fields Farm and Blackwood Hill Farm.
