Description
This bridge, located approximately 100 yards south-west of the First World War Memorial, dates back to the 16th century but has undergone significant rebuilding in the 18th century and was widened in the early 19th century. The parapet was rebuilt slightly later. It is constructed from red and white sandstone ashlar, featuring herringbone tooling on the south-east face and a smooth finish on the north-west face.
On the south-east side, there are four arches that span the River Churnet. The leftmost arch is from the 16th century and has a four-centred shape, while the other three arches are from the 18th century and are segmental in design, with the two outer arches being wider. The parapet here is plain, with parallel tooling on the stonework.
The north-west face, dating from the early 19th century, also has four segmental arches, with the two outer arches being wider. It features a plain parapet band leading to a plain parapet, again with parallel tooling.
