Description

This is a row of three cottages, now used as shops, located on Clerk Bank in Leek. They were built in two phases and likely date back to the 15th or 16th century, with extensions and refacing occurring in the 17th and 18th centuries. The cottages feature a mix of construction styles, with Nos 3 and 4 having well coursed and squared sandstone walls, while No. 2 has cruck framing with brick external walls. They all have plain-tiled roofs and are single-unit in plan.

In terms of exterior details, No. 2 is two storeys high with a two-window range. It has a 19th-century shop window with small panes, a plank doorway, and a passage entry to the right, along with a blocked window to the left. The upper windows are casements with two and three lights, featuring small panes in the two-light casement on the right. There is a left-hand gable stack, and the stairs are located in the angle with the fireplace. Nos 3 and 4 are low two storeys with attic dormers and also have a two-window range. They feature paired inner doors with plain wood lintels, and each side has inserted 19th-century shop windows, with traces of an earlier opening visible below the right-hand window. The upper windows have been renewed in earlier openings, and there are two dormers in the roof, along with end wall stacks.

Inside, No. 2 retains cruck framing in the gable wall, with timber framing in square panels on the internal wall that separates the through passage to the right. The external brickwork is likely from the 18th century. The stairs are again in the angle with the fireplace. Nos 3 and 4 also have cruck framing internally, with one cruck truss partially exposed in the right-hand gable wall and a second cruck truss in the dividing wall between the two units.
