Description
The former grammar school, also known as the Grammar School (Alexandra Club), is located on Clerk Bank and dates back to 1723. It is built from coursed and squared stone and features a plain-tiled roof. The building is two stories high and has a three-window range. The central door is topped with a heavy stone lintel, and an inscribed stone above the doorway states: "This building erected by the Earl of Macclesfield, Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, Anno Domini, 1723." The flanking and upper windows are three-light plain chamfered mullions with latticed glazing. The gables are coped and have moulded kneelers, and there is a moulded stone eaves cornice. Brick stacks are located at the end walls. The interior has not been inspected.
