Description

The Maude Institute, located on Clerk Bank in Leek, is an institute building dating primarily from the early 19th century, with a datestone of 1896. The building is constructed of brick with stone quoins and has a Welsh slate roof. It has two storeys and a two-window front range with a central entrance. The central entrance features a steep pointed archway with clustered shafts and interlaced glazing in the fanlight. There are 42-pane sash windows on each side of the entrance, and upper windows are 9-pane sashes. A quatrefoil stone panel above the doorway commemorates the Reverend C.B. Maude's vicariate, recording that the building was presented for the use of the parish church of St Edward, Leek, in August 1896. A two-window return and a recessed two-window range wing are present, built in a separate phase. The interior was not inspected. The building is included on the list for its historical and group value.
