Description
The milepost north of the layby near Stafford bypass is a significant milestone dating from 1761, combined with an early 19th-century milepost. It is made of sandstone and features a rectangular shape with an arched top. Attached to it is a triangular post with a domed top. The face of the sandstone stone is unmarked, while the post has raised lettering that reads 'TILLINGTON' at the top. Below, an angled plate indicates 'STONE/5/MILES' on the left and 'STAFFORD/2/MILES' on the right. This milepost is important as it represents the historical use of roads in the area and reflects the standardization of transportation during the 18th century in Staffordshire, making it a rare example of its kind.
