Description
The Eccleshall Memorial Cross is a First World War memorial dedicated in 1921, with additions for the Second World War. It is made entirely of sandstone and has a square plan.
The memorial, facing south, features a Celtic wheel-head cross atop a tall, tapered, and chamfered shaft. The shaft flares at its base, connecting to a square pedestal, which sits on a tall, square plinth that rests on a chamfered, single-stepped base. The south face of the pedestal is inscribed with the words: 'TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF / THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919'. The plinth lists 45 names, while the base has a single name. The east face of the plinth includes the Second World War inscription: 'WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945 / [Names]'. On the north face of the plinth, the inscription reads: 'O VALIANT HEARTS WHO TO YOUR GLORY CAME / THROUGH DUST OF CONFLICT AND THROUGH BATTLE FLAME / TRANQUIL YOU LIE, YOUR KNIGHTLY VIRTUE PROVED, / YOUR MEMORY HALLOWED IN THE LAND YOU LOVED'.
