Description

Milestone located in front of number 64 on High Street in Stone, likely dating from the early 19th century but featuring a late 20th-century plate. It is made of ashlar and has a round-headed flat stone post topped with a square metal plate. The plate displays the distances: "LICHFIELD/ 22 MILES/ LONDON/ 135 MILES." This milestone marks an important staging post on the coach routes from London to Holyhead and London to Carlisle. The road through Stone was modified in the 19th century, changing its direction from northwest at the Crown Hotel to further northwest into Newcastle Street, indicating that this milestone was installed after that alteration.
