Description
Church Lane Evangelical Church is a building dating from 1839, originally constructed as a Plymouth Brethren meeting room and now serving as a free chapel. It is made of brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The church has a rectangular plan and is designed in a classical style, characterized by wide eaves and verges.
The east facade is symmetrical, featuring a three-window range with the ends set back and windows on two levels. The left end has a later 19th-century gabled porch with a return entrance that has been converted into a window, while the right end has a blocked segmental-headed entrance. The windows are detailed with ashlar sills and gable-form lintels, and they consist of cross-casements with leaded glazing; there are no windows on the west elevation. The north end has a pedimental gable, and a 20th-century gabled porch with return entrances that includes paired doors and a front stained-glass window. The upper window is tripartite, with an ashlar sill and surround, and the glazing matches that of the east facade.
Inside, the church has plain walls and ceiling with 20th-century fittings. This building is noted as a very early example of a Plymouth Brethren meeting room, with the Plymouth Brethren being founded in Plymouth around 1830.
