Description
The Old Sheriff's Office, located at No.10 Church Lane and including No.35 Mill Street, is a building that dates back to the 15th century, with a late 18th-century addition on the right and 19th-century additions to the rear. It features a close-studded timber frame with brick additions and has a tiled roof with a brick end stack.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a two-window range. The first floor is jettied and supported by five deep arch braces. The entrance is located at the right end and has a wide-boarded door. The ground floor includes three plate glass windows, while the first floor has two casement windows with iron opening lights.
Inside, the building has chamfered beams and flat joists, and it is noted to have some original roof structure. No.35 Mill Street, which is part of this listing, is constructed of brick and also features two storeys with a jettied timber-framed first floor and a hipped roof end. The ground floor has a segmental-headed entrance and two shop windows with cornices, which were boarded at the time of the survey. The first floor has two casement windows and two narrow windows at the left end.
The right return of No.35 Mill Street has an entrance with a wedge lintel and a first-floor window with a four-pane sash. The higher two-window range to the right has a cogged brick cornice and end stacks, along with a shopfront that has a cornice and canopy, also boarded at the time of the survey. The first floor features windows with nine-pane horned sashes. There is a cart entry to the right that shows remains of a full cruck truss on the right return wall, making this an interesting historical survival. No.35 Mill Street was listed on December 17, 1971.
