Description
The foundations of St Bertelin's Chapel are located immediately west of the Church of St Mary in Stafford. These foundations date back to the 11th century, with significant rebuilding during the Medieval period. The chapel was demolished in 1801 and excavated in 1954. The ground plan is laid out in dressed stone, showing a small nave and a narrower chancel, with the former entrance to the Church of St Mary now blocked. At the center of the site, there is a replica of a cross that was discovered during the excavation of an earlier wooden structure. St Bertelin, an 8th-century hermit, is recognized as the founder of Stafford, and his shrine was a notable pilgrimage site throughout the Middle Ages.
