Description

The boat maintenance workshop, located on the east side of the Shropshire Union Canal at Norbury Junction, dates from the early to mid-19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. This single-storey brick building features a large hipped slate roof that overhangs at the eaves. On the north side, there are double sliding wooden doors that provide access from the canal dock. The northeast corner has an early 20th-century bay window, while the west, south, and east sides display various original cambered windows with small-paned cast-iron frames. The west side includes 19th-century extensions and a tall tapering chimney stack from a former steam engine. Inside, the workshop has an industrial king post truss roof and a 20th-century concrete dry dock. Norbury was a canal community centered around the junction of the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal and its Newport Branch, near the Shropshire Union Canal.
