Description

The Old Grammar House is a house dating from the late 16th century, which incorporates some earlier fragments and features a significant extension from the 1830s. It was restored in the 1970s. The building is timber framed, with a brick extension that is rendered and lined to resemble ashlar. It has a plain tile roof that is hipped to the right, along with a slate-roofed extension and brick ridge stacks.

The original 16th-century structure has an L-shaped plan, with the main range aligned east-west facing south and a rear wing to the west aligned north-south. The 1830s wing to the east is also aligned north-south. The main house, located to the left, is two storeys high with a gable-lit attic, featuring a continuous first-floor jetty and jettied attic gables. The close studding is uninterrupted across all floors.

The facade consists of two bays with 20th-century wood mullioned windows on cyma reversa brackets, and small four-pane casements in the centre of the first floor. There is a central four-panel door set within the original frame, which is sheltered by a gabled wrought iron porch. This entrance is approached by a flight of brick steps, and a curved tension brace extends from the right side of the door frame to the sill beam. The extension wing is two storeys tall and features one bay with glazing bar sashes.
