Description

Little Saredon Manor is a house with an early 16th century core that has undergone significant alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The core is timber framed, while the outer walls have been largely rebuilt in brick. The house features plain tile roofs and brick stacks, including a large lateral stack on the north-west wing, built in English bond. It has an H-plan layout with a single-bay hall range that runs north-west to south-east, facing north-east, and an entrance located at the south-east end. There are flanking two-bay crosswings, and the building is two storeys high with an attic. The two gabled wings are positioned beside a recessed hall range, with a window arrangement of 1:1:2, featuring casements; the windows in the north-west wing have segmental heads.

A small late 19th century stone porch, with Tuscan columns and a pedimented gable, is located in the re-entrant angle between the hall range and the left-hand south-east wing. At the rear, there is a timber framed projection that contains the staircase. The gable of the north-west wing features a first-floor jetty.

Inside, the entrance hall showcases exposed timber framing at the north-west end, with a chamfered and stopped spine beam and joists. There is a late 19th century stone fireplace with a Tudor arch and panelled spandrels, along with a timber overmantle that dates from the 17th century or is in a 17th century style. The dog-leg staircase, dating from around 1700, has been heavily restored in the late 20th century. In the north-west wing, there is an exposed timber framed partition wall and chamfered and stopped ceiling beams. The south-east wing contains a drawing room that occupies the entire ground storey and was refurbished in the early 19th century. This room features large panels with moulded frames, Ionic columns at the junction of the two bays, and an egg and dart frieze. Little Saredon Manor is situated within a moated site that likely predates the current structure.
