Description
This is a barn and attached engine house located approximately 30 yards north of Preston Vale Farmhouse. The barn dates from the late 18th century, while the engine house was added in the mid-19th century, with some later alterations. The structure is built of red brick and features slate and plain tile roofs. It is aligned east-west, with the barn on the west side and the engine house on the east.
The barn was originally one storey but has been modified to include one and two storeys, showcasing dentilled eaves. It consists of five bays, with 20th-century casement windows inserted in the central and right-hand bays, and a small mid-19th-century latticed casement window on the first floor to the right. There are blocked threshing floor doors to the left and right of the centre, both with segmental heads; the left one has been modified to include a cart entry, while the right has an inserted doorway. There is also a roughly central inserted doorway with a segmental head, and each bay on the left, right, and centre features five tiers of air vents.
The engine house has a left-hand bay that is one storey with a gable-lit loft, and a right-hand bay that is also one storey. The left-hand bay is mostly obscured by a later attached cowhouse, except for a segmental-headed door on the left. The right-hand bay includes a door on the left and a window on the right, both with segmental heads and latticed panes. A square factory-type chimney stack is located at the rear.
This building is significant as it illustrates the adaptation of an 18th-century barn for the use of steam power in the 19th century.
