Description
The Conservatory at Hilton Park is an early 19th-century structure. It features a unique design with a circular plan and is one storey high, topped by a glazed hemispherical dome. The south-western half of the frame is made of cast iron, while the north-eastern half is wooden, resting on a high plastered brick plinth. The main entrance, located on the south-west side, has a pediment, and the glazed wall of the south-west semi-circle is divided into bays by pilasters.
Inside, the dome is supported by a pair of brick arches that spring from a central brick flue designed like a column, which still shows remnants of fluted plasterwork and a coved capital. Surrounding the column are brick steps arranged in a circular layout. The south-west half features cast iron pilasters and a frieze decorated with a brick key and acanthus leaf design. The conservatory was heated by a furnace located in the cellar. At the time of the last survey in June 1986, the building was in a state of dereliction.
