Description
House. Built in the early 19th century, incorporating the remains of a 16th/17th century house to the rear. The house is constructed of red brick with a hipped plain tile roof and brick integral end stacks. It is aligned north-south, facing west, and has three storeys, with the second floor having reduced proportions. There are four windows with glazing bar sashes, shaped and keyed lintels, and hood moulds with block stops. A sill band runs along the first-floor windows. Columns with palmette capitals flank a central 6-panel door with a broken pediment containing a fanlight with radiating glazing bars. Inside, there is an open well staircase with stick balusters, an open string with carved tread ends, and a ramped handrail. A 19th-century fireplace has a polished marble surround, while 19th-century attic fireplaces have cast-iron grates. Several 17th-century boarded doors are present, as are chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and an open fireplace with a timber bresummer. Essington Hall stands within a former moat.
