Description
The former canal workers' cottages at 33-36 Tyrley Wharf date to 1837, confirmed by a datestone on the gable end of number 33. The cottages are constructed of brown brick with ashlar dressings, and have slate roofs with coped verges and stone kneelers. The main range comprises two storeys and three windows facing south. The south-facing elevation has multi-paned two-light casement windows in stone surrounds, with three doorways, also in stone surrounds, on the ground floor. One doorway is to the left of the left-hand window, and the other two are to the right, alternating with the windows. A prominent brick stack is located to the left (adjacent to number 33), and another is shared between numbers 34 and 35.
Number 36 is set at a right angle to the rear on the left, forming an 'L' shape. This section has two storeys, with a single casement window in a stone surround on the west gable. A lean-to addition provides the south entrance, with a three-light casement window added in the late 20th century to the left. A prominent ridge stack is present on the south range.
The gable end of number 33 features a moulded stone inscription reading “TYRLEY WHARF” below the 1837 datestone. The cottages, as a group, contribute to the picturesque character of Tyrley Wharf.
