Description
This is a model farm complex, dating from the early 19th century. It was built for George Tollet IV (1767-1855) and is located southwest of Betley Old Hall. The complex is constructed of red brick with plain tile roofs. It's situated on a hillside, arranged over three levels, and includes cow sheds, cart sheds, a granary, stables, and a mill.
The farm complex comprises north and south ranges featuring two-tier cow sheds that enclose a farmyard, accessible from the upper storey of the south range and the lower storey of the north range. Additional cowsheds are situated to the east of the lower yard. The north range has a dentilled eaves band and ten bays of three-centred arches to the ground floor, with semi-circular arched openings above. Two doors at ground floor level to the left provide access to stables. The south range is lower and has eleven bays of three-centred arches. The west range incorporates five cartshed bays with three-centred arches. Tallet steps in the south gable allow access to the first-floor granary. The east range features three pitching eyes to the loft and two segmental-headed doors.
The lower yard’s south range has six round-headed doors at ground level and is blind above, while the east range features seven bays of segmental arches. The interiors of all buildings feature bolted king-post roofs, and the ground storeys of the cow sheds are groin vaulted in brick. A feeding passage is located behind the lower tier of cowsheds in the south ranges, entered from the east range. Within the mill building, a cast iron undershot water wheel remains, along with its axle shaft and associated gears, and powered the machinery used in feed preparation.
