Description
6 and 8 Queen Street are a pair of houses, now used as offices, dating from around 1800. They are built of brick and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The buildings are three stories high and consist of three bays, with an additional bay on the left that connects to a rear wing featuring a long stair window.
The central doorway in the main section is adorned with an ornate case that has Ionic shafts and a sun motif carved in the pediment. Below this is a plaque depicting Cupid on a lion, which is believed to be by the sculptor Flaxman. This main entrance is flanked by 12-pane sash windows with flat arched heads. The three upper windows are also 12-pane sashes, with the attic windows featuring six panes. The central upper window is highlighted by a stuccoed architrave.
The left-hand bay includes a doorcase with a pediment supported by consoles, and there is a heraldic device in the frieze above. The window above this door has a segmentally arched brick head. Each floor has sill bands, and there is a moulded eaves cornice along the top, with gable end stacks.
