Description
The milepost located southwest of 'The Polite Vicar' public house is a 19th-century structure made of painted cast iron. It features a cylindrical post topped with a fluted dome and has an attached rectangular plate. The inscriptions on the milepost are cast in relief, indicating distances: "LEEK 11 MILES" on the left face and "NEWCASTLE 1/2 MILE" on the right face.
This milepost was erected by the Newcastle under Lyme Turnpike Trust and was cast by Hales of Cobridge, Stoke on Trent, around 1879. It serves as a good example of a 19th-century milepost, reflecting the standardisation of roads and the development of turnpikes to support the transport needs of the industrialising landscape of 19th-century Staffordshire. The milepost remains in its original location and is intact.
