Description

No. 123 Smithy Lane is a cottage that dates from the mid-to-late 17th century and has been divided into separate units. It features a timber frame with painted brick infill set on a sandstone plinth and has a plain tiled roof. The building is one storey with an attic, which is lit by two gabled eaves dormers and consists of two framed bays. The framing consists of three rectangular panels from the cill to the wall plate.

The cottage has mid-19th century casement and fixed light windows with latticed glazing, which fill the framing panels; there are two pairs of windows on the left, one pair in the center, and one pair on the right. The dormers also have latticed lights. To the right, there is a mid-20th century boarded door surrounded by barley-sugar twisted colonettes. The ridge stack, which is roughly central, was rebuilt in mid-19th century purplish-brown brick.

At the rear, there is a mid-19th century brick addition that is built at right angles to the main structure. A former entrance on the left, which led to what was once No. 122 (now part of No. 123), has been blocked, and windows have been inserted in its place. These windows were originally from the 19th century additions to Maer Hall, which was demolished in the 1960s.
