Description

The blast furnace, built between 1790 and 1801, is located on Springwood Road in Chesterton, Newcastle under Lyme. Constructed of brick, it is positioned against a slope to aid in the charging process. The furnace features battered lower walls and a raking top, along with a splayed archway leading to the tapping hole. Inside, there is a square fire chamber made of stone that transitions into a funnel-shaped shaft. This furnace was built by Thomas Kynnersley and was steam-powered, although the steam engine was taken out of use in 1833. The casting house was converted into cottages in 1834, which have since been demolished.
