Description

Avenue House is a late 18th century house located in Elford. Originally L-shaped, the house comprises a main east-west range facing south and a north-south rear service wing, with later extensions to the rear. Constructed of red brick with a plain tile roof featuring raised verges, it has brick integral end stacks. The house is three storeys high, with reduced proportions to the second floor height. The front elevation features three windows with casements and segmental heads, and a central part-glazed door with a rectangular overlight.

Inside, a full-height dog-leg staircase is centrally located, featuring turned balusters. The west-facing dining room has a former wall cupboard, now an alcove, with a segmental head and a raised and fluted key. Several 18th century panelled doors are present, along with two fireplaces on the second floor, each with corbelled mantelpieces and cast iron grates. The kitchen in the rear wing includes a large open fireplace and stopped ceiling beams with run-out stops.
