Description

Riverway Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with subsequent alterations. It is timber-framed with brick additions, and has a plain tile roof, along with a brick integral end stack and a corner stack. Originally built with a two-bay end lobby-entry plan aligned north-south, facing west, it was formerly one storey and attic with two square panels to the eaves. It is now two storeys with three square panels to the eaves, the third tier appearing to imitate timber framing with straight tension braces. The windows are 20th-century casements with false shutters. A gabled porch shelters the entrance door on the right. The left-hand, or north gable, features queen struts and a king strut above the collar, with lap-jointed principal rafters carrying a ridge piece. Inside, the south bay contains a large open fireplace and a timber-framed stack, while the north bay has a timber-framed axial partition.
