Description
Shenstone Hall is a large farmhouse, primarily from the 17th century, with alterations and refacing from the early 19th century. It is built of red brick with stone dressings, quoins, and bands at floor level, while the 19th-century front is in ashlar. The building features tiled roofs with brattished verge parapets and finials, along with massive side stacks that have triple shafts at their final stage. The plan consists of two parallel ranges.
The west front, which faces the road, has two storeys and gable-lit attics, showcasing three flush gables. The crenellated verge parapets are part of the early 19th-century effort to give the building a Gothic appearance. The gables are rebuilt with quatrefoil windows above four light chamfered mullion windows, likely from the 19th century, on both the first and ground floors. The central gable is complemented by a three-storey flat-roofed porch, which is square in plan and reaches up to the eaves level. This porch has three light chamfered mullion windows above a heavy Tudor-arched lintel leading to an entrance that is now blocked.
The east front has a similar layout but has been entirely refaced in the early 19th century. It features raised strings that step over the windows and Tudor-arched tripartite sash windows on the first floor, with similar French casements on the ground floor. These are flanked by pointed arch sashes, and under the central gable, there is a Tudor-arched segmental head French casement above a delicate colonnaded porch. This porch has a cornice, fleuron, and triglyph frieze supported by clasped, clustered columns over a central entrance that includes a segmental arch, fanlight, and double part-glazed doors.
Inside, the hall features a full-height entrance with delicate Gothick plasterwork and a cantilevered stone stair that has a cast iron balustrade.
