Description
The Boswell Statue, located in Market Square, Lichfield, was erected in 1908 and created by Percy Fitzgerald. It features an ashlar base with a bronze figure of James Boswell, along with bronze relief panels depicting scenes of Boswell and Dr. Samuel Johnson. The front of the plinth includes an inscription that reads "BOSWELL/ 1740:1795" beneath an armorial crest. The frieze showcases portrait medallions of Boswell's contemporaries. The statue depicts Boswell in contemporary dress, complete with a sword and hat. Surrounding the statue are plain wrought-iron railings, some of which are serpentine in design. Boswell was known as the friend and biographer of Dr. Samuel Johnson, and the statue was made and presented by Percy Fitzgerald, who was both a writer and sculptor, as well as Boswell's biographer.
