Description

Woodroffe’s Cottage is an early 17th-century house located on Hodge Lane in Marchington. It is a timber-framed structure with a plain tile roof and a central brick stack. The house follows a T-shaped plan, with the main north-south range connected to an east-west rear wing. The building is two storeys high with a gable-lit attic. The jettied first floor features ovolo-moulded bresumers supported by moulded brackets, and closely spaced studs with a middle rail on both storeys. There are three windows, fitted with latticed casements, some incorporating baluster-shaped studs below. A central door features a nailed construction and an ogee head. The end roof trusses have two collars, a single pair of purlins, and a ridge piece. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest. Woodroffe's Cottage represents a well-preserved example of a substantial 17th-century farmhouse, exhibiting group value as a building indicative of the period and possessing significant architectural merit.
