Description
Burleigh is a late 18th century red brick house that has undergone early to mid-19th century alterations. It stands three storeys tall and features a window arrangement of three groups of three, with the left and right sides in splayed bays, and a right-hand two-storey section. The windows are sashes with glazing bars. The central entrance has a panelled door set within a pilastered doorcase that includes console brackets, and there is a modern open porch. The house has a tiled roof with parapet gable ends that feature kneelers. To the left, there is a two-storey wing that is set back. Historically, Lord Burleigh, who later became the Earl of Exeter, stayed here under the name of John Jones and married a local farmer's daughter on April 13, 1790, with the bride unaware of her husband's true identity until after the ceremony.
