Description
Leegomery Mill is a watermill, likely built in the late 18th century and extended in the early 19th century. It is constructed from red and blue brick and features a dentilled eaves cornice on the roof, which was uncovered at the time of inspection in May 1986. The mill stands 2½ storeys tall, with openings on the second floor located only in the gable ends. The first floor has three windows, while the ground floor also has three windows on the north side, one of which is blocked. There is a doorway on the first floor to the left, accessed by a 20th-century cast-iron staircase, and another doorway to the left of the right-hand window on the ground floor. All openings were boarded up during the inspection. A single-storey extension is located to the east, and the waterwheel is concealed by a corrugated-iron structure at the west end. It is believed to be of the pitchback type, measuring approximately 16 feet in diameter and 3 feet wide, although it was difficult to see during the inspection.
Inside, the machinery is complete, including the wooden axle of the waterwheel, which carries an iron pit-wheel, as well as an iron wallower and spurwheels mounted on a wooden upright shaft that is much charred. The crown wheel is positioned directly over the spur wheel, and there is a sack hoist drum mounted above. The mill formerly housed two pairs of stones; one has fallen due to a fire, while the other remains in place on the stone floor. The building suffered significant fire damage in the late 1970s or early 1980s.
