Description
The Hadley War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1953, designed by an unknown architect. Made of Aberdeen granite, the cenotaph is raised on two stone steps and features a concave chamfered plinth. Its minimal style emphasizes strong vertical lines, highlighted by sharply ridged corners. The inscriptions include "THESE DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE" on the sepulchre, a list of names of those who fell in both world wars on the pillar, and "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE/FROM HADLEY AND DISTRICT/WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE/IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY" on the plinth. The top step bears the inscription "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE."
The memorial was unveiled in 1953 by Colonel H B Sankey, following the formation of a committee to raise funds for it in 1919. Contributions from the local 1951 Festival of Britain celebrations also supported the memorial. As a granite cenotaph, it serves as a significant and striking monument within the town, commemorating the dead of Hadley from both world wars.
