Description
The railway bridge, built around 1858 for the Wellington and Severn Junction Railway, is located west of the Cheshire Cheese public house. It is constructed of yellow stock brick with stone dressings and has been repaired using blue engineering bricks. The bridge features a single segmental arch supported by stone imposts, with slightly battered brick piers and abutment wings that have curved splays and small terminal piers. The stone coping of the parapet extends down over the abutment wings. Notably, the arch on the west side has been rebuilt with blue engineering bricks. The bridge is integrated into the railway embankment. The Wellington and Severn Junction Railway was authorized in 1853, with a short single-track line from the main line to Horsehay opening in 1857 and extending to Lightmoor in 1859. Although the company was leased by the Great Western Railway, most of the goods traffic was initially operated by the Coalbrookdale Company.
