Description
Madeley Court is a building mainly from the 16th century, with some traces of 13th-century construction. It was originally built as a grange for Wenlock Priory. In 1553, during the Dissolution, it was purchased by Sir Robert Brooke, who was the Speaker in the House of Commons, and it remained in the Brooke family until the early 19th century. Abraham Darby I, a notable figure, rented the property from 1709 until his death.
The house is large and constructed of ashlar, and at the time of the last survey in 1980, it was undergoing restoration. It features tiled roofs with gables that have parapet coping and large brick chimney stacks. The building is two stories high with attics and has an L-shaped plan, originally including a west wing. The north-west hall range has been extensively rebuilt.
Notable architectural features include gabled stone attic windows with finials, large stone mullion transom windows with dripmoulds, and an early 17th-century stone porch to the right of the hall range. This porch has a moulded round arch and ornate gables decorated with volutes, pediments, and strapwork foliage. The east wing contains a large 16th-century timber newel staircase, along with rooms that feature bolection moulded panelling and a chimney piece.
